German Scholar to Discuss Poet's Use of Literary Emblems

Karl Josef Höltgen, a leading authority on literary emblems, will present a lecture and slide presentation on "William Blake and the Emblem Tradition" at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Armstrong Browning Library Lecture Room at Baylor University.
Höltgen will discuss the British poet William Blake's use of the emblematic genre. Literary emblems were woodcuts of pictures with poems underneath. Blake, best known for his poetry, was also a renowned illustrator.
Höltgen, emeritus professor of English, at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, has taught at the University of Bonn and is a visiting fellow of Clare Hall at Cambridge University and Linacre College at Oxford University. He has published books on the English emblem tradition as well as editions of emblem books and articles on English literature from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Höltgen's lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the presentation.
