Baylor String Quartet to Perform March 28

The Baylor University String Quartet, comprised of four members of the Baylor music faculty, will present a concert at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Treasure Room of Armstrong Browning Library.
The quartet's first violinist is Bruce Berg, associate professor of violin; the second violinist is Jody Gatwood, Brown Visiting Professor of Violin; the violist is Kathryn Steely, instructor of viola; and the cellist is Gary Hardie, professor of cello and coordinator of strings.
Their program will open with Franz Schubert's "Quartettsatz" (or "Quartet Movement"), which is the first movement of a proposed string quartet that the composer began writing in December of 1820 but later abandoned.
As a tribute to the late Richard Willis, who died last year at the age of 68, the Baylor String Quartet will perform his String Quartet No. 2. Willis was emeritus professor of music composition and Composer-in-Residence at Baylor from 1964 until his retirement in 1996. His Second String Quartet is in five movements, the second of which leads directly into the third without pause.
The final piece will be the last of Ludwig van Beethoven's string quartets, his String Quartet No. 16 in F Major, Opus 135.
