Regents Chairman Brings Traditional Greetings To Fall Graduates

December 20, 2004

Baylor University conferred degrees on more than 700 graduates in fall commencement exercises Dec. 18 in the Ferrell Center.
Baylor President Robert B. Sloan Jr. presided over the ceremony, during which diplomas were presented to graduates of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, School of Music, Hankamer School of Business, Louise Herrington School of Nursing, School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, George W. Truett Theological Seminary and the Graduate School.
Will D. Davis, chair of the Baylor board of regents, brought the traditional greetings to the graduates:

Distinguished Graduates, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

The Board of Regents' official Mission Statement for Baylor University is "to educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community." With this statement, the Regents boldly assert that a degree from Baylor University means that there is at least one tower of educational excellence that also points upward to God - that the towers of Baylor - Pat Neff Hall, Old Main, Draper, the new Sciences Building, Truett and Burleson - remind us that there is at least one spire of learning in whose shadow men and women still seek that knowledge for which no diploma is offered - where no sham nor pretense would say that learning can stand alone, but where the threads of academic preparation and knowledge are woven, without seam, into the Christian moral fiber of those men and women - where the commencement robe you proudly wear today is a seamless garment, that clothes each one of you, not only with superb academic preparation and achievement, but also with dignity, character, integrity and honor, not simply for the hour of this ceremony, but for your entire lifetime.
The Regents are confident that each of you meet the goal of Baylor's Mission Statement. On behalf of the members of the Board of Regents of Baylor University, I congratulate each and every one of you upon your graduation, upon attaining this very significant milestone in your life, and offer my sincerest best wishes, and God speed, wherever afar you may fling your Green and Gold!
Thank you.
