WACO, Texas (Nov. 7, 2019) – Baylor University will continue its Baylor Conversation Series, featuring nationally renowned speakers and friends Robert P. George, Ph.D., and Cornel West, Ph.D., at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in Waco Hall.

The event is part of an ongoing conversation series – begun in 2017 by President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D. – which has focused this fall on civil discourse for the campus community. Drs. George and West speak together often about the importance of learning to agree to disagree with respect, civility and humor.

“Our society is in dire need of examples of true civil discourse,” President Livingstone said. “Dr. George and Dr. West are distinguished scholars who come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, but they have learned how to respectfully disagree and have ultimately become friends. We look forward to an always spirited, but respectful dialogue as part of our Baylor Conversation Series. Both are great examples of civil discourse, and I strongly encourage students, faculty and staff to attend.”

Robert P. George is The McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, while Cornel West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. The two have shared the stage many times, including at a Baylor in Washington event on May 29, 2018, in Washington, D.C., where the scholars spoke about the life and legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Civil discourse is vitally important for higher education,” President Livingstone said. “It’s especially at Baylor as we strive to be a marketplace of ideas and extend the love of Christ toward others.”

This event is non-ticketed, but bag check security procedures will be in place. No backpacks are allowed.

More information about this series is available on the Baylor Conversation Series website.
