WACO, Texas (Sept. 25, 2019) – This week, Baylor University will host multiple concerts, movie screenings and lectures in business, science and English. This week is also Missions Week 2019, with events taking place Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, where representatives from different international and domestic missions and ministry organizations will share ways students can get involved in mission work.

MONDAY, Sept. 30

Chapel Highlights - Chapel will feature TED Talks for Missions Week at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. in Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave. For more information, visit the Spiritual Life website.

Distinguished Artist Series: Stockholm Chamber Brass - The Baylor School of Music will host Stockholm Chamber Brass, one of the leading brass ensembles in the world, for a concert to launch the 2019-2020 Distinguished Artist Series. Stockholm Chamber Brass was founded in 1988 by five young Swedes who proceeded to win First Prize in that year’s International Competition for Brass Quintets. Movie Mondays - Movie Mondays will host a screening of “Amazing Grace,” a film about Gospel singer Aretha Franklin. The screening will be at 7 p.m. at the Waco Hippodrome, 724 Austin Ave. Free tickets can be picked up at the Waco Hippodrome Box Office or online at Student Activities website.

Baylor Conversation Series: Faculty Panel on Civil Discourse - This fall, President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., will host a Baylor Conversation Series focusing on civil discourse. This Conversation Series panel will include David D. Corey, Ph.D., professor of political science and associate director of Baylor in Washington program; Elesha Coffman, Ph.D., associate professor of American intellectual history; Leslie Hahner, Ph.D., associate professor of communication; and Greg Garrett, Ph.D., professor of English. TUESDAY, Oct. 1

Psych and Neuro Lecture - The department of psychology and neuroscience will host Chris Turck, Ph.D., from the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry. Beall-Russell Lecture: Creativity in the Humanities - The Beall-Russell Lecture series will host National Book Award winner Colum McCann and award-winning author Terry Tempest Williams. McCann and Williams will take part in a question-and-answer conversation about writing and creativity in the humanities. Confessions of an Entrepreneur Lunch Speaker Series - Confessions of an Entrepreneur will feature Catherine Ballas of REFIT Revolution. The lunch series hosted by the Hankamer School of Business highlights local, successful entrepreneurs and business owners and shows students that there is more than one path to success as an entrepreneur. World Cinema Series - The Interactive Media and Language Center will be hosting a screening of "Where Do We Go Now?" at 6 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium, 1420 S. Seventh St. The Arabic film -- about Muslim and Christian women who join forces to stem the tide of violence in their war-torn Middle Eastern village -- will be shown with English subtitles and is open to the public. Professional Development Program (PDP) – Leading with Emotional Intelligence - The Business Center for Professional Selling will host Deborah Sawyer, managing director for ZRG Partners, for their professional development program. Sawyer will discuss the relationship between emotional intelligence and the dual bottom line and share how the dual bottom line can only exist with strong and emotionally intelligent leaders. Film and Digital Media (FDM) Screening of STROOP - The department of film and digital media will be showing a screening of STROOP, a documentary about the rhino poaching crisis, directed by Baylor alumna Susan Scott. U.S. Evangelicals Confronting Apartheid: Race, Politics and Religion in the Cold War - The Institute for Studies of Religion will host the lecture, “U.S. Evangelicals Confronting Apartheid: Race, Politics and Religion in the Cold War.” The lecture will be led by Melani McAlister, Ph.D., associate professor of American studies and international affairs at George Washington University, and will discuss how evangelicals in the U.S. and South Africa navigated their understandings of U.S. policy in light of debates about missionary work, communism, racism and Christian social responsibility. Hispanic Heritage Banquet - The Hispanic Student Association in conjunction with the Department of Multicultural Affairs will host their annual banquet celebrating Hispanic heritage and cultures. A Capella Choir and Chamber Singers - Baylor University’s A Capella and Chamber Singers, conducted by Brian A. Backyard Ecology Grand Opening - The grand opening of the new Backyard Ecology Hall in the Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive, will be at 10 a.m. This exciting collection of hands-on experiences will encourage individual discovery and an appreciation for the natural world. The new gallery includes live animals that tell a story about local ecology and traditional museum collection objects while also providing creative experiences for children and families.
