70 Students To Compete In Baylor Green & Gold Mock Trial Contest

The Baylor Undergraduate Mock Trial Team (BUMT) will be hosting its first Green & Gold Invitational Mock Trial Tournament on Nov. 5-7 at the Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center.
The three-day contest, which is sanctioned by the American Mock Trial Association, has attracted teams from the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Houston Baptist University, Central Missouri State University, Drury University, Springfield, Mo., and Baylor. The 12 competing teams will be represented by more than 70 undergraduate students.
Heather Creed, director of student relations for Baylor Law School and BUMT faculty sponsor, said the students will play the parts of attorneys and witnesses. "Each team (plaintiff and defendant) will give an opening statement, closing argument, and direct and cross examine three witnesses," she said. "Local attorneys from the Waco and Central Texas area will judge the students." Creed said the contest will become an annual event sponsored by the BUMT organization, which currently has a membership of about 14.
The tournament schedule will include one round on Friday, Nov. 5; two rounds on Saturday, Nov. 6; and one round Sunday, Nov. 7, followed by an awards ceremony and a championship round.
