Low Vibrations Sound Of Oct. 19 Guest Recital

Two practitioners of the fine art of subterranean musicality -- players of low brass instruments -- will present a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Meadows Recital Hall.
Brian Meixner serves as Euphonium Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas, and tubist Dan Sipes teaches low brass and music technology at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Also performing on the recital will be pianist Mitsuru Saito, a doctoral student at the University of North Texas, and two members of the Baylor University music faculty, Lecturer in Low Brass David Graves and Director of Collaborative Piano Vincent de Vries.
The program will open with a transcription for tuba and piano of Antonio Vivaldi's Cello Sonata No. 2, RV 41, followed by Fantasie Original, a work by Ermano Picchi as arranged in 1909 for euphonium and piano by John Philip Sousa's favorite low-brass soloist, Simone Mantia.
The musicians then will perform another tuba-piano transcription, the first movement of Johannes Brahms's Cello Sonata No. 1, Op. 38.
The balance of the recital will feature compositions from the second half of the 20th century, Philip Sparke's Euphonium Concerto and the Suite for Tuba Solo by Rodger Vaughan.
The program will conclude with Variations on a Motive by Wagner, a work by Robert Jager that is scored for two tubas and euphonium.
