BU Team To Battle British Debaters Oct. 18
Two Baylor University students will take on the British National Debate Team at the annual Rufus and Alline Huff Debate on U.S. Foreign Policy. The debate, which will focus on stem cell research, will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, in room 101 at the Castellaw Communication Building. The event is free and open to the public.
The two British debaters competed for the honor and won a month long tour of American colleges and universities. The team is sponsored by the English Speaking Union in the United Kingdom and the National Communication Association in the U.S.
The British team is made up of Robert Marrs, 22, from the University of Glasgow and Aneurin "Nye" Brewer, 22, from Bristol University. Marrs won top debate honors in the UK by reaching the Scottish Mace Finals, while Brewer was crowned European Champion in 2003 and then reached the semi-finals of the World Championships in Singapore in 2004.
The top Baylor team of Josh Oie, a sophomore from White Bear Lake, Minn., and Obie Lansford, a sophomore from Sherman, will compete against the British team. Currently, Oie and Obie have compiled the highest winning percentage for debate in the country with a win/loss record of 12-2.
The annual Huff debate is made possible by the generous contributions of the family and friends of Col. and Mrs. Rufus Huff. Two of the Huff's three sons graduated from Baylor: Richard Huff (B.A., 1969) and Wayne Huff (B.A., 1972). Both Richard and Wayne Huff are attorneys and participated in debate during their high school years. Wayne Huff and his wife, Melinda Smith Huff, won numerous awards as members of Baylor's debate program.
