72-Hour Prayer Worship Event Begins Sunday on Fountain Mall

WACO, Texas (March 29, 2019) – In the spring of 1945, Baylor University students prayed for spiritual renewal for 90 straight days, a movement that helped inspire ministries on campus and around the world, from the Journeyman mission program to the Passion Conference.
Beginning at 8 p.m. this Sunday through Wednesday, the Baylor campus community will gather again in Jesus’ name for FM72, a 72-hour prayer and worship event at the heart of campus on Fountain Mall.
During FM72, students from dozens of college ministries and organizations – coordinated by Baptist Student Ministries (BSM) at Baylor – have committed to pray for 72 hours, one hour at a time, at prayer tents on Fountain Mall. At 8 p.m. each night, the Baylor community will join together to worship, pray and hear God’s Word from guest teachers and worship leaders, just as they did during a similar movement nearly 75 years ago.
Speakers include Jonathan “JP” Pokluda, Jennie Allen, Jonathan Tremaine Thomas and Harrison Ross, with worship led by Jaye Thomas, Jimmy McNeal, Jaleesa McCreary and other local worship leaders.

FM72 is more than a worship service as students minister to fellow students, said Charley Ramsey, B.A. (University Scholar) ’97, M.A. (Religion) ’00, Ph.D., director of BSM at Baylor. Students designed the three prayer tents – open all day and night from 8 p.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Wednesday on Fountain Mall – as an interactive experience focused on personal renewal, prayer for the campus and community, and international concerns.
“We want to create a space where all feel welcomed and where every student can stop, rest, breath, evaluate and ideally take a step closer to God,” he said. “The stations are meant to inspire and equip. They are safe places to rest, think, find an encouraging friend and soak in the presence of the Lord.”
The “mighty move of God” that occurred on the Baylor campus more than seven decades ago is serving as an inspiration for today’s generation of students, Ramsey said.
“We are just learning about it now, and we have become inspired and challenged by the faithful lives and dedicated service of men and women who came before us,” he said. “They discovered treasures of God in prayer and this changed their destinies. We want our priorities to change, our vision to expand; we want to dream again. We want to see a move of God in this generation like that which came before. The prayer of the students for this past year has been, ‘Lord, do it again.’”
