Baylor University's Class of 2008 will have the opportunity to play with their food and fellow freshmen during Freshman Follies, sponsored by Student Foundation, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Minglewood Bowl.
An annual event for the university's newest students, more than 2,700 freshmen are expected to participate in various relays and games involving food in order to become better acquainted with their peers. Students are encouraged to dress in costumes according to this year's theme, "Fling and Bling."
"Freshman Follies is intended to provide a fun casual environment for new freshmen to enjoy meeting each other. Food is the central theme and the messier you get the better," said Jennifer Terrell, Student Foundation director.
Student Foundation members will begin the evening's events with "dorm raids" by rallying freshmen from their residence halls to Minglewood Bowl at 7:45 p.m. Upon their arrival, students will be eligible to participate in a raffle for prizes from Waco-area businesses. Prizes include gift certificates to HEB, Outback Steakhouse and Sunkissed Tans, Baylor t-shirts from T-Shirts Plus and complimentary sandwiches from Backyard Burgers.
Freshmen can play traditional games with a twist, such as tug-o-war over a pit of jam, cottage cheese and shaving cream, Kool-Aid over-under relays and foot-races over a tarp covered with baby oil and vegetable oil.
The quantity of ingredients may seem like a grocery list for the entire Bears football team. Student Foundation members have collected 15 jars of grape jam, 12 bottles of vegetable oil, 155 cans of shaving cream and 46 bottles of syrup to accommodate the seven messy relays and games.
"Student Foundation annually hosts Freshman Follies to provide a welcoming, memorable experience for freshman during their first couple of weeks at school," Terrell said.
Student Foundation strives to serve Baylor through fundraising and volunteer efforts, including Bearathon, Freshman Follies and Premiere Weekends. Student Foundation will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year with an exhibit dedicated to the history of the organization in the Harry and Anna Jeanes Discovery Center.
