Baylor Debate Team Wins Wichita State Tournament
The Baylor University debate team completed a highly successful run at the Wichita State University debate tournament held last weekend in Wichita, Kan. Approximately 50 teams from universities in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri participated in the tournament.
In the varsity division, the team of Obie Lansford, sophomore from Sherman, and Josh Oie, a sophomore from White Bear Lake, Minn., took first place, and the team of Brooks Johnson, a sophomore from Flower Mound, and Halli Tripe, a freshman from Omaha, Neb., took second place. In the varsity division Baylor had five of the top 10 individual speakers, and in the junior varsity division Baylor had two of the top five individual speakers.
The students debated a topic that calls for adopting an energy policy that reduces fossil fuel consumption.
"We have had a very good beginning to our 2004-05 season," said Dr. Karla Leeper, acting chair of communication studies and The Glenn R. Capp Professor of Forensics. "We have a large group of very talented young debaters. Their hard work and dedication have really paid off. I believe that we have some students who will make their presence known at regional and national competitions for the next several years. It is an exciting time for our program."
