Debate Tournament To Draw Teams From Across Country

Top debate teams from colleges and universities throughout the nation will journey to Baylor University on Jan. 24 to compete in the Glenn R. Capp Debate Tournament, one of the largest debate tournaments in the country. Approximately 85 to 100 teams from schools such as the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California as well as member schools of the Big 12 are expected to participate in the Capp tournament. Sponsored by the department of communication studies at Baylor, the competition will run through Jan. 26.
This year's debates will focus on the topic of security assistance to Southeast Asia.
Debates on Saturday and Sunday will take place in the Hankamer School of Business, Draper Academic Building, Burleson Hall and Old Main. The elimination rounds will be held on Monday at the Clarion Inn, 801 S. Fourth St. The debates will begin at 8 a.m. each day.
As the host school, Baylor will not compete in the tournament.
In addition to the Capp tournament, the communication studies department will sponsor this weekend the Helen and Sam Pessarra High School Debate Tournament. Nine high school teams from around the country will focus on the issue of alternative energy. These debates will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Castellaw Communications Building.
