Baylor University students, faculty and staff will introduce incoming freshmen to the legacy of university traditions through various events Sept. 10-14 during Traditions Week, an annual event sponsored by the sophomore class.
"As Baylor students, it is important that freshmen learn as much as they can about the history and traditions that surround their university because they are not just part of any college or university, they are now part of Baylor," said David Browning, sophomore class president.
The week's events begin at 7 p.m. Friday with Slime Night, sponsored by the Place 2BU. More than 2,500 freshmen will gather to process down 5th Street, receive their slime caps and participate in their first Baylor pep rally. Dr. Dub Oliver, dean for student development, and Dr. Eileen Hulme, vice president for student life, will address the newest additions to the Baylor family about spirit and explain the slime cap tradition. The green and gold beanies have been worn by incoming freshmen since the turn of the 20th century.
"Traditions tie the current generation of students to those who have gone before. Learning about traditions gives students an understanding of the university, what it stands for, what being a Baylor Bear means," Oliver said.
Baylor Bear athletics also hold sentimental value for students, faculty and alumni. A Freshman Tailgate will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Touchdown Alley outside of Floyd Casey Stadium prior to the game against Texas State. Olympic gold medalists Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson will be available for autographs.
The university's Christian heritage remains its strongest tradition, dating back to its founding in 1845. Throughout several eras of change, Baylor has remained committed to its original core values and promotes integration of this faith with higher learning.
The Baylor community will gather for Prayer Meet, an evening of reflection and prayer, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Founders Mall. College ministers from several Waco churches will lead participants in a time of prayer for the university as well as a time of worship.
Traditions Week will conclude with Greek Life Day from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Fountain Mall. The Brandon Johnson Band will provide the evening's entertainment, and free refreshments will be available.
Members of Baylor's fraternities and sororities will speak with students about their personal experiences in the Greek system, including All University Sing, Steppin' Out and Homecoming. Freshmen will also be able to ask any questions they might have regarding the recruitment process.
In addition to the sophomore class, sponsors for Traditions Week include Baylor's Place 2BU, Alumni Association and Baptist Student Ministries.
