Church-State Institute Receives $30,000 for Religious Liberty Fund

WACO, Texas - Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo., has transferred the balance of the G. Hugh Wamble Fund for Religious Liberty Studies to The J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies at Baylor University. Additionally, the institute will receive correspondence, manuscripts, court briefs and various papers of the late Hugh Wamble.
With the $30,000 donation, the Dawson Institute will establish the G. Hugh Wamble and Beverly C. Wamble Fund for Religious Liberty. The documents will form the core of the G. Hugh Wamble Collection on Religious Liberty in the institute's Church-State Research Center, which contains the world's largest collection of books, periodicals, documents and archival material relating to church-state relations and religious liberty.
"Dr. Wamble, in our estimation, was one of America's greatest and most effective defenders of religious liberty, and it will be a privilege to house his collection at this institute," said Dr. Derek Davis, director of the J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies, associate professor of political science, and editor of Baylor's internationally known Journal of Church and State.
The transfer of the collection came at the request of Wamble's widow, Beverly.
Wamble taught at Midwestern Seminary from 1959 until his death in 1991. He was an acknowledged expert on the constitutionality of government aid to religious schools, known as parochiaid. The collection includes case briefs and other materials from such well-known cases as Wamble v. Boyer which helped to define the constitutional law on the subject of parochiaid.
