Model U.n. Competition Scheduled for Nov. 15

November 12, 1997

High school students from around the state will gather at Baylor University at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Barfield Drawing Room in the Bill Daniel Student Center to compete in a Model United Nations Competition.
"This is our largest competition yet," said Linda Adams, professor of political science and director of Baylor's Model United Nations Team. "Four years ago, we started out with 20 students competing and now that number has grown to more than 450 students.
"This is a wonderful learning experience for the students. Participants learn how to conduct research, how to speak in public and how to negotiate."
The competition recreates a meeting of the United Nations. The students, representing delegates from 50 countries, will participate in one of seven committees and will discuss such issues as environmental concerns, human rights and international security. At the end of the competition, awards to the best team and the best student will be given.
The award ceremony is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room. All committee sessions will take place in the Draper Academic Building.
