Intellectualism, Religious Values Subject of Symposium

WACO, Texas - The impact of pragmatism, or intellectual thought, on religious and moral values will be the subject of the Baylor University Pruit Memorial Symposium Nov. 13-14 on the fifth floor of the Cashion Building in Hankamer School of Business.
Dr. Stuart Rosenbaum, professor of philosophy at Baylor, said pragmatism supports moral and religious beliefs though they may not appear complementary to each other.
"The relationship between intellectual thought and moral and religious commitments will improve when religious people realize they must take more seriously their intellectual lives, and when intellectuals realize they need not turn away from their moral and religious commitments," he said.
The conference titled "Pragmatism's Common Faith" will feature four leading scholars on intellectual thought and religious faith. The speakers include Dr. Richard Bernstein, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York City; Dr. Steven Rockefeller, professor of religion at Middlebury College in Vermont; Dr. Robert Westbrook, professor and chair of the Department of History at the University of Rochester; Dr. Roger Ward, assistant professor of philosophy at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky; and Rosenbaum.
The conference will begin at 8 p.m. on Nov. 13. On Nov. 14, sessions will begin at 8, 10 and 11 a.m. and 1:45 and 3 p.m. The public is invited to all the sessions.
