October 17, 1997

by Richard Veit

Baylor University's Concert Choir, conducted by assistant director of choral activities John W. McLean, will present a program of sacred and folk music at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in Jones Concert Hall. The choir will be accompanied by the Baylor Concert Orchestra, led by Stephen Heyde, the Mary Franks Thompson Professor of Orchestral Studies and Conductor-in-Residence.
The concert will open with an instrumental work, as the Concert Orchestra performs Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor, in the familiar arrangement of Remo Giazotto. The orchestra will also take part in the next piece on the program-Franz Schubert's Mass in G Major (D. 167).
After intermission, the 91-voice Concert Choir will sing "Beati quorum via" by Charles Villiers Stanford, two pieces by Jean Berger ("O Give Thanks Unto the Lord" and "Cease from Anger"), Ernani Aguiar's "Salmo 150," and Norman Dello Joio's "Of Crows and Clusters."
The final portion of the program will be devoted to our rich folk music heritage. The Concert Choir will present Luigi Zaninelli's arrangement of "The Water Is Wide," a setting by Norman Luboff of "Deep River," and the Moses Hogan arrangement of "Elijah Rock."
This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at 710-3991.
