Missionary to Speak Oct. 15 As Part of Missions Emphasis Week

Nancie Wingo, a missionary and Baylor University graduate, will speak at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Waco Hall as part of Missions Emphasis Week.
Wingo is a retired member of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board who actively serves others in her retirement. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Baylor and a master of religious education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Appointed as a missionary to Lebanon in 1963, she taught in Beirut from 1964 to 1974. Leaving to teach in Fort Worth from 1975-80, she returned to Beirut in 1976 and remained through 1987. She then transferred to Gaza where she was an English teacher in the Baptist Library.
Her speech begins Missions Emphasis Week, which started in the early 1980s with the original vision to connect missionaries with students. Rae Wright, associate director of the Baptist Student Ministries, said the BSM wants Baylor students to have actual contact with missionaries so that missions become real. "The fact that Baylor funds Missions Emphasis Week demonstrates the commitment to missions," said Wright.
Other Missions Emphasis Week activities are scheduled throughout the week. Speakers will visit about 60 classes promoting missions, and missionaries will be on campus to talk individually with students in the Bill Daniel Student Center Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
