Family and Consumer Sciences Career Trends to be Discussed

During the month of October, the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Baylor University will host a series of lectures on current and future career trends in the fields of interior design, dietetics, fashion design and merchandising and child and family services.
On Thursday, Oct. 9, at 12:30 p.m. Joseph Smith from the office of Americans with Disabilities Act Regulations and Compliance (ADA) will speak on building designs that meet ADA accessibility requirements. At 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16, Irene Bosiger, a Baylor alumna and a nutritionist for NASA, will lecture on science and technology in the field of dietetics.
Ligaya Quiocho, director of the international menswear division for The Gap and Banana Republic and also a Baylor graduate, will speak at 9 a.m. Oct. 20. Her topic will address careers in the fashion industry. Rounding out the month of lectures will be a discussion of career opportunities with non-profit organizations that deal with child and family studies. The lecture, given by Barry Smink, executive director of the Make A Wish Foundation of North Texas, will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 29.
"We like to bring in professionals who have unusual positions to help students see other career possibilities," said Dr. Rita Purdy, professor and chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. "Through meeting these professionals, our students make wonderful networking contacts. Our graduates have done some very impressive things and we want to emphasize that."
All of the lectures will take place in Room 213 of the Mary Gibbs Jones Family and Consumer Sciences Building on the Baylor campus. The lectures are free and open to the public.
