WACO, Texas (Oct. 24, 2017) — The Baylor University and Waco communities will have the opportunity to hear a free lecture by NASA Astronaut Col. Shane Kimbrough at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in room B-110 of the Baylor Sciences Building. The lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences, the Office of the Vice Provost and Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics & Engineering Research.

The topic of Col. Kimbrough’s lecture will focus on “Life on the International Space Station.” He will give special insight to his experiences as one of the country’s leading astronauts.

“It is a privilege hosting any NASA astronaut on the Baylor campus, much less Col. Shane Kimbrough. I say this because he is not just any astronaut. He served as commander of the International Space Station for six months this past year leading an international research team,” said Lee Nordt, Ph.D., dean of the Baylor College of Arts & Sciences.

Col. Kimbrough earned a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point, and a master of science degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Before being selected as an astronaut, Col. Kimbrough joined NASA in 2000 as a flight simulation engineer on the Shuttle Training Aircraft.

Kimbrough was selected by NASA in 2004. He completed his first spaceflight in 2008 as part of STS-126 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor, which docked with International Space Station. He spent almost 16 days on the mission to expand the crew living quarters to accommodate a six-member crew. During the mission, he performed two spacewalks. He now has a total of six spacewalks and a total of 189 days in space.

One of Col. Kimbrough’s daughters, Kaitlyn, is a sophomore Baylor Business Fellows major. While he was serving on the International Space Station, he conducted a live teleconference with a group of Baylor students and faculty on Jan. 27, 2017.

Col. Kimbrough and his family will be the guests of President Linda A. Livingstone at the Baylor football game against University of Texas on Saturday, and he will be introduced on the field during the game.
