Sculpture Exhibit Opens at University Art Gallery Sept. 2

A new art exhibit featuring the powerful works of sculptor Roger Columbik opens Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the University Art Gallery in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center on the Baylor University campus.
Columbik, who is head of the art department at Southwest Texas State University, uses cast steel and bronze for his large, involved pieces and does not rely on pedestals to display his sculptures.
"This is an entirely different viewing encounter. People can walk right up to the pieces," said Paul McCoy, associate professor of art and director of the University Art Gallery. "People will want to sit and contemplate the work. It is a very meditative installation and absolutely beautiful. I think people will be quite surprised."
In addition to finished pieces and several maquettes - small models of a sculpture - the exhibit also will feature 28 framed pages of a journal that Columbik kept while on a trip to Jerusalem.
"This is a wonderful perspective on how an artist thinks," said McCoy. "This exhibit is a great exploration of Columbik's spiritual life."
The Columbik exhibit runs through Sept. 27 and is free and open to the public. The University Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 710-1867
