Moonlight Moves Tournament at Ferrell Center Set for Aug. 1-2

July 30, 1997

Moonlight Moves, a new midnight-basketball league that targets at-risk teens, will hold its inaugural tournament at Baylor University on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2, in the Ferrell Center. Games start at 5:10 p.m. Friday and 9:45 a.m. Saturday. The finals of the seven-game tournament are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
In addition to the tournament games, the High Impact Squad, a nationally-known, stunt basketball team, will perform its high flying, acrobatic basketball maneuvers between games on Friday night and at 1 p.m. Saturday. Game halftimes will feature various contests, such as a dash-for-cash, in which contestants can win money.
The Junior League of Waco and the City of Waco's police department, recreation department and housing authority began Moonlight Moves as an way to reduce youth crime and gang activities in the community. More than 150 area children between the ages of 15-20 have participated in the program this summer, and organizers say that it has been a very positive, successful first year.
The Moonlight Moves tournament is open to the public, and there is no admission charge. For more information, call the Ferrell Center at 755-1915.
