Baylor Gives to Sponsor 'Moonlight Moves' Program

WACO, Texas - Baylor University has joined the Junior League of Waco and the City of Waco's police department, recreation department and housing authority in a collaborative effort to reduce youth crime and gang activities in the community.
"Moonlight Moves," a new midnight-basketball and volleyball program for at-risk youth, begins league play on Friday, June 13, and Baylor will be the exclusive sponsor of the Moonlight Moves tournament, scheduled for Aug. 1-2 at the Ferrell Center.
"We hope to further develop the emotional character of the individuals participating in the program through exposure to the discipline, competition, camaraderie and positive environment found in team sports," said Carol Wofford, co-chairman of Moonlight Moves.
"We feel that the youth will be motivated to sign up for Moonlight Moves knowing they have an opportunity to play in the Ferrell Center. We believe that this one week-end event will be the motivating factor that makes the difference for many of our youth in deciding to be a part of this new program."
The city of El Paso has a highly successful program that is similar to Moonlight Moves, Wofford said. During the first year of the El Paso program, youth crime in that city fell 38 percent.
Moonlight Moves is open to residents of the Waco/McLennan county area who are age 15- 20. There is no charge to participate, but registration is required.
