May 27, 1997

WACO, TEXAS - Baylor University women's basketball coach Sonja Hogg today informed Jeanne Nowlin, the university's assistant athletic director for women's sports, that she is staying in Waco. Owners of the Long Beach expansion team of the American Basketball League recently approached Hogg about coaching the new entry in the women's professional league.
"I'm happy at Baylor," Hogg said. "Baylor gave me a wonderful opportunity three years ago and my job is not complete here. The people at Baylor and the Waco community have been supportive and I am not able to walk off and leave this team at this time. My student athletes and staff have worked so hard and sacrificed a great deal to get us this far."
"I'm pleased that Sonja is going to stay at Baylor and continue to build upon the excellent foundation that she has established in our women's basketball program," Nowlin said. "She just coached the team to its first winning season in 13 years and I'm pleased with that progress. Our women's basketball team is in a competitive position in the Big 12 Conference and I believe we will continue to make our presence felt under Sonja's leadership."
