William A. 'Red' Hall Flag Plaza to be Dedicated May 17

WACO, Texas - A dedication ceremony of the William A. "Red" Hall Flag Plaza at Baylor University's Hart-Patterson Track Complex will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, during the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
As part of the dedication ceremony, a plaque commemorating the plaza will be presented. The plaque reads in part, "Red Hall, a 1925 Baylor University graduate, focused his energy on tutoring Dr. W.T. Gooch's classes while majoring in chemistry. After graduating, he coached high school football in Texas and used his training from Wentworth Military Academy to earn the rank of Air Force captain in World War II. Red owned and operated the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company in Oklahoma City, Okla. for 27 years, but he secretly drank Dr Pepper because of its Waco origin.
"Mr. Hall set his first Senior National Olympics meet record in 1992, at the age of 92, running the 1500-meter race in 17:22.26. Later that same year, he shattered this record with a time of 12:35.00. Red won two other medals: one for the 100-meter (29.37) and another for the 3000-meter (32:04.53). Although Hall could not compete in track at Baylor because of eligibility limitations, he has proudly run each race in the green and gold Baylor jersey given to him by his friend, coach Clyde Hart.
"Red Hall's life is an example of his commitment and love for our Lord, his family, and to the entities these flags represent.
"This flag plaza is dedicated to Red Hall by his family and friends, May 17, 1997."
After the reading of the plaque, Baylor's Air Force ROTC unit will remove the flag flying at the track and present it to Hall. Hall will then take a new flag and raise it over the track flag pole.
Hall, a native of Farmersville, Texas, is 96. Until last year, he ran up to two miles a day. Currently he lives in Oklahoma City, Okla. His son, David Hall, is a former Oklahoma governor who now lives in La Jolla, Calif
