Baylor to Broadcast May 17 Commencement Over Internet
WACO, Texas - Spring commencement exercises at Baylor University, scheduled for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, will be broadcast live over the Internet for the first time.
Internet users will be able to listen to and watch the ceremony from anywhere in the world, using a Web browser and other freely available software, said Tim Logan, associate director for academic computing in Baylor's Center for Computing and Information Systems.
"We wanted an opportunity to try out some new technologies, and we felt like this was a high-profile event for Baylor," Logan said.
"There's no question that we'll be able to use what we've learned from this broadcast in other instructional and promotional areas," he said.
The broadcast will use live audio streaming for the RealPlayer application, developed by Seattle-based Progressive Networks, inventors of the industry-standard RealAudio format. Users can experience video as well as audio with the CU-SeeMe videoconferencing application, originally developed by Cornell University.
Both software applications will run on Windows and Macintosh platforms. The software can be downloaded from the Baylor web site.
