Baylor Theatre to Present ‘Fiddler on the Roof’

WACO, Texas (Sept. 23, 2016) — Baylor University Theatre will present a classic musical to kick off its 2016–17 season.
Fiddler on the Roof will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28–Oct. 1 and Oct. 5–8, with matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 in the Jones Theatre of the Hooper Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave.
Fiddler on the Roof is a classic musical based on the tales of "Tevye the Dairyman" written by Sholom Aleichem over a 10-year period spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. The original stories were written in Yiddish and involve a Jewish family and community in Ukraine experiencing changing traditions and the anti-Semitism of the Russian Empire.

“Despite this very specific setting, Fiddler on the Roof has shown great universal appeal, not only in the United States, but throughout Europe, South America, Africa, Australia and even Tokyo, where it’s been produced more than 1,300 times,” said Steven Pounders, director and professor in the theatre department.

“Conceptually, we would like to capture this universal experience of a community that faces change and hardship together,” said Pounders. “Our production will showcase the villagers of Anatevka working, worshipping and interacting throughout the entire play, even in many moments that aren’t specified by the script. Tevye and his family will serve as a lens through which we observe an entire community sharing joys and sorrows.”

Tickets for Fiddler on the Roof are $20 for the public or $17 with a valid Baylor ID. Groups of 10 or more are eligible for a group discount.
