Baylor's 70th Ring Out Ceremony to be Held May 16

May 6, 1997

Baylor University's 70th annual Ring Out ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Burleson Quadrangle on campus.
Started in 1927 by the dean of women, Irene Marschell King, the ceremony includes passing an ivy chain from senior women to their junior partners. This symbolizes the passing of Baylor traditions from the outgoing class to the incoming class.
The key ceremony also has become part of the Ring Out tradition. The passing of the key to the Centennial Box from the permanent senior class president to the incoming student body president began as a tradition in 1945. This key will be used during the university's bicentennial celebration in 2045 to open a time capsule buried by the class of 1945.
Incoming student body president Gannon Sims; Collin Cox, the class of 1997 permanent president; student body secretary Michael Jackson; and Paige Manley, external vice president, will offer remarks.
The choral director for the ceremony will be Barbara Brittain, a senior from Waco, and the accompanist will be Dr. Herbert Colvin, emeritus professor of music theory and university carillonneur.
