Cannon Named 1997 Piper Professor

Dr. Raymond Joseph Cannon Jr., professor of mathematics at Baylor University, has been selected a Piper Professor of 1997 by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. As a Piper Professor, Cannon will receive a $2,500 honorarium, a certificate attesting of his selection and a gold pin commemorating the event.
Cannon graduated from the College of Holy Cross and earned his doctorate in mathematics from Tulane University. He has taught at Baylor since 1980.
"I was honored to be one of Baylor's nominees for the award. I am thrilled to be named a Piper Professor," he said.
The Piper Foundation selects 10 professors annually as Piper Professors. Selections are made on the basis of nominations submitted by each college or university in Texas. An impartial selection committee from the academic community reviews each nomination and seeks out the well-rounded teacher who has made special impact on his or her students and the community and has been devoted to the teaching profession.
Since the inception of the Piper Professor Program in 1958, 11 Baylor professors have been named recipients of the award.
