WACO, Texas (June 9, 2016) — Baylor University will host the Center for Public Justice’s annual Kuyper Lecture from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 10, in the Barfield Drawing Room in the Bill Daniel Student Center.

This year’s Kuyper Lecture will feature John Inazu, Ph.D., an associate professor of law and political science at Washington University in St. Louis and a senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. Inazu will be speaking about his new book, “Confident Pluralism: Surviving and Thriving Through Deep Difference,” which examines ways in which Americans can use tolerance, humility and patience to bridge differences.

“‘Confident Pluralism’ argues that we can and must live together peaceably in spite of deep and sometimes irresolvable differences over politics, religion, sexuality and other important matters,” according to Inazu’s website. “‘Confident Pluralism’ suggests that it is often better to tolerate than to protest, better to project humility than defensiveness, and better to wait patiently for the fruits of persuasion than to force the consequences of coercion.”

Inazu released his first book, “Liberty’s Refuge: The Forgotten Freedom of Assembly,” in 2012, and he has also written for USA TODAY, CNN, The Hedgehog Review, the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.

"I'm excited by the opportunity to be with Baylor for this year's Kuyper lecture and for the vital questions John Inazu, our speaker, will be asking about how we as a country can both survive and thrive in our deep difference,” said Center for Public Justice CEO Stephanie Summers.

The Center for Public Justice’s annual Kuyper Lecture aims to encourage people to examine the role of religion in public life and in pursuing justice.

“Since its founding over 30 years ago, the Center for Public Justice has been at the forefront of inspiring and equipping citizens in their God-given responsibilities to pursue justice for all,” Summers said. “This Kuyper lecture continues that work, helping us equip citizens, develop leaders and shape policy for the glory of God and the good of all."

The event is free and will be followed by a reception and book signing. People planning to attend are encouraged to sign up online, but registration is not required. The Barfield Drawing Room is located on the second floor of the Bill Daniel Student Center at 1311 S. 5th St.
