Mortar Board Hosts Women's Day Tea April 25

The Baylor University chapter of Mortar Board honor society will host its annual Women's Day Tea at 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Harrington House on the Baylor campus.
At this year's event, 20 Baylor faculty members who are library workers will be honored. "The students wanted to select a group on campus that was important to the academic excellence at Baylor," said Elizabeth Vardaman, lecturer of information systems in the Hankamer School of Business and adviser of the Baylor Mortar Board chapter. "These faculty members are a symbol of the great and generous ways the libraries have aided academic excellence at Baylor."
Additionally at the tea, Mortar Board will recognize 12 outstanding senior women, each nominated by professors. An advisory committee selects the seniors who receive the most nominations from professors. This award is not open to Mortar Board members.
In nominating senior women, professors take into account academic excellence, devoted service to a group or project and unique research. While academic excellence is stressed, women who have made significant contributions to the university and the community are chosen to ensure a well-rounded group.
Women's Day was started in 1961 by the Laurel Society, a revered and prestigious honor society for Baylor women. The Laurel Society affiliated with Mortar Board in 1970. The honor society is open to Baylor seniors who maintain a 3.7 grade-point average.
