Arts Authority Dr. Jeremy Begbie Will Give 30th Annual Northcutt Lecture on April 7

WACO, Texas (April 5, 2016) – Baylor University’s 30th annual Northcutt Lecture will host arts authority Jeremy Begbie, Ph.D., for “Desiring God in Worship: A Musical Perspective on a Contemporary Theme” at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the McLean Foyer of Meditation of Armstrong Browning Library.
“Jeremy Begbie is one of the most thoughtful and innovative thinkers in the area of music and theology. His writing and speaking is challenging the music and worship community to reimagine what is possible,” said Bradley Randall, Ph.D., Ben H. Williams Professor of Music and director of the church music program and the Center for Christian Music Studies. “As a speaker he is engaging, entertaining, and he beautifully integrates music into his presentations. While he is one of the most profound writers in the field, he is also able to distill complex ideas into language that is approachable and contextual.”
Begbie, recognized for his writing and lecturing on theological aesthetics, will examine the relationship between theology and the arts. His research specifically addresses the interplay between music and theology. He serves as Thomas A. Langford Research Professor in Theology at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. Begbie is also a Senior Member at Wolfson College, Cambridge, and an affiliated lecturer in the faculty of music at the University of Cambridge.
Begbie is the author of multiple books, including “Voicing Creation’s Praise: Towards a Theology of the Arts,” “Theology, Music and Time” and “Resounding Truth: Christian Wisdom in the World of Music,” which won the Christianity Today 2008 Book Award in the theology/ethics category.
A professionally trained musician, Begbie has performed extensively as a pianist, oboist and conductor. He is an ordained minister of the Church of England, having served many years as the assistant pastor of a church in West London. Begbie studied philosophy and music at Edinburgh University and theology at Aberdeen and Cambridge.
Since its inception in 1985, the Northcutt Lecture Series has grown to become an integral component of the academic and spiritual life of the Baylor University School of Music. The series is designed to bring nationally and internationally known church music scholars to campus and is made possible by an endowment from LeGrande and Cassandra Northcutt of Longview, Texas.
