WACO, Texas (March 15, 2016) - Renowned theologian Walter Brueggemann will give a lecture from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in Miller Chapel of the Tidwell Bible Building.

Brueggemann's lecture – The Risks of Nostalgia ¬– is sponsored by the department of religion and Baylor University Press. Brueggemann published the book "Ice Axes for Frozen Seas: A Biblical Theology of Provocation" with the Press in 2014.

"Dr. Brueggemann is the most widely respected Old Testament theologian working today," said W.H. Bellinger Jr., Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of religion. "He is known to be one of the most significant interpreters of the Old Testament for the church and for contemporary life. He has a remarkable ability to relate biblical texts to other disciplines and to life today and to make people think."

Bellinger said the lecture will give students the opportunity to hear a dynamic lecturer who creatively interprets the Old Testament. Brueggemann's voice will bring a different perspective for students to consider and show them the ways the Old Testament can change their lives, Bellinger said.

"My guess is that Dr. Brueggemann will talk about the human tendency to live in the past, with which we are comfortable, rather than moving forward into the 'new things' God is shaping for the church and the world," he said.
The lecture is free and open to the public.

Tidwell Bible Building is located at 600 Speight Ave., Waco, Texas 76798.
