Baylor University Honors Those Who Served With Veterans Day Celebrations

WACO, Texas (Nov. 6, 2015) – In honor of Veterans Day, Baylor University will host three events to thank those who have served our country.
“To me, Veterans Day is a day of remembrance,” said student veteran Katy Humphrey. “I remember my friends who didn’t make it home and thank them for giving such a great sacrifice. Everyone here in America can keep the freedoms and opportunities we hold so dear because of these sacrifices. On this day, I’m always a little bit sad, but I’m also so proud that I can still call myself a United States Marine.”
Veterans Day at the Baylor Law School will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Room 127. It is open to all faculty, staff and students who are veterans and will include a luncheon, color guard and roll call. If you would like your name or spouse’s name on the roll call, please email Jenny Branson with your name, branch of service and rank.
The Veterans Day Ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Barfield Drawing Room. There will be a guest speaker and refreshments. This event was organized by the Veterans of Baylor, Veteran Educational and Transition Services (VETS) and the Army & Air Force ROTC. It is open to the public.
A Veterans Tailgate at the Baylor-OU game will take place two hours before kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 14, in the tailgating area near the Mayborn Museum Complex. Food will be provided by George’s. This event is open to all veterans and their families.
“These events highlight how special this day is to veterans on campus,” said student veteran Christopher Strange. “It is a way to connect with other service members at Baylor and celebrate those that are here with us. We also focus on why the day is important to us and remember those who could not be there.”
In addition, a Baylor VETS program has been added to the Baylor University Christmas catalog. The public is invited to donate to the program and help support veterans in need. The mission of VETS is to promote the academic success of veterans at Baylor. Its services include a mentoring program, career development, a transition coach and more.
“For student veterans at Baylor, Nov. 11 is a day to remember and honor those who have served our country to preserve our freedom,” said Janet Bagby, Ph.D., VETS coordinator and senior lecturer in the department of educational psychology in Baylor’s School of Education. “We currently have approximately 130 veterans attending Baylor. Realizing the need to provide services to entering veterans, Baylor began the VETS program in 2012.”
Baylor Law School is located at 1114 S. University Parks. Barfield Drawing Room is located inside the Bill Daniel Student Center at 1311 S. Fifth St. The Mayborn Museum Complex is located at 1300 S. University Parks.
