Concert Choir Presents A Mass by Mozart March 25

Baylor University's 92-voice Concert Choir will perform a program of folk songs, spirituals, and 20th-century sacred choral music-as well as one of Mozart's Salzburg masses-at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at in Jones Concert Hall.
John W. McLean, lecturer in choral music, will conduct the Mozart work, while the remainder of the concert will be under the direction of graduate student Jennifer Jacobs. Accompanist for the Concert Choir is Joel Bacon.
Two modern sacred compositions will open the program-Daniel Moe's "Hosanna to the Son of David" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd" from John Rutter's "Requiem."
These will be followed by three pieces from English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. His motet "O Clap Your Hands," originally scored for double chorus, brass, and organ, was first performed in London's Westminster Abbey. "The Turtle Dove" is Vaughan Williams's setting for baritone solo and unaccompanied chorus of an English folksong. (Chad Martin will be the baritone soloist.) "O Mistress Mine," which uses text from Shakespeare, is the third of the composer's "Three Elizabethan Partsongs."
The first portion of the program will conclude with Vincent White's arrangement of the spiritual "I Wan' Jesus to Walk with Me," the Shaw/Parker setting of "My God Is a Rock" (with baritone soloist John Sauvey), and Wendell Whalum's arrangement of "The Lily of the Valley."
Following intermission, the Concert Choir will present a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Mass in C Major, K. 317. It was written in 1779 and is known as Mozart's "Coronation Mass."
