Banding Together to Save a Life: Baylor Golden Wave Band Teaming Up with Texas Tech to Raise Awareness of Be The Match Foundation

Bands encourage others to save lives by learning more about bone marrow donor registry

WACO, Texas (Sept. 29, 2015) – Leading up to the Baylor-Texas Tech football game Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Baylor University’s Golden Wave Band is teaming up with the Texas Tech Goin’ Band from Raiderland to help raise awareness of bone marrow donor registry by encouraging others to be the one to save lives through the Be the Match Foundation.

Be the Match is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a national registry of potential marrow donors for people diagnosed with blood cancers, like leukemia and lymphoma. Medical research has shown that cells from donors between the ages of 18 and 44 lead to better long-term survival for patients after a transplant.

The Baylor University Golden Wave Band had its own registry drive in August and registered more than 100 donors, who are ready to save lives.

Now, the Golden Wave Band is asking the support of Baylor Nation and the Central Texas community through the following:

• Raising Awareness on Facebook: The Golden Wave Band is challenging the Texas Tech Goin’ Band to help raise awareness on Facebook. “Like” the Baylor University Band Challenge Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/BUBandChallenge

• Register on the Be The Match Bone Marrow Registry: Baylor’s campus registry drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, and Friday, Oct. 2, in the first floor lobby of the Bill Daniel Student Center on campus. Signing up to be on the Be the Match marrow registry takes about two minutes. If you are unable to come to the drive, you can register at this link: http://join.marrow.org/BUband

• Register at AT&T Stadium and watch the combined halftime performance: The Baylor Golden Wave Band and Texas Tech Goin’ Band will share halftime during Saturday’s football game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington as both bands promote the need for marrow donation through the efforts of Be the Match. Fans can sign up to be on the national registry in the main concourse of AT&T Stadium during the second half of the game.

Baylor will host a follow-up registry drive from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, outside Moody Library on the Baylor campus.
