Baylor Student Activities Partners with Local Theater for Movie Mondays at the Hippodrome

WACO, Texas (Sept. 16, 2015) – Baylor University’s department of student activities will host a new weekly movie series, Movie Mondays at the Hippodrome, beginning Monday, Sept. 21, at the Waco Hippodrome Theatre.
The goal of the partnership between the Hippodrome and the department of student activities is to offer Baylor students and the Waco community the opportunity to view a variety of documentary and independent films that explore important world topics.
“We’re really excited about this partnership with the Hippodrome,” said Jordy Dickey, assistant director of the student union. “We see this as a great opportunity to showcase films that can help start a dialogue, inspire thought and dive into important issues in the world today. Many of these films are showcased in Dallas and Austin, so we asked ourselves why not Waco?”
In addition, the partnership will aim to increase community engagement among students.
“This extension of our educational mission into the city through his partnership will provide a dynamic opportunity for our students and the community to be exposed to ideas, art and socially compelling topics on a weekly basis,” said Matt Burchett, director of student activities.
The selected films are recent releases that have premiered or been placed at festivals across the country, including Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Dallas International Film Festival, Austin Film Festival and New York Film Festival.
The first screening will feature the film “Poverty, Inc.,” a documentary that explores the multi-billion-dollar poverty industry.
The featured film will be screened throughout the day, but students are encouraged to attend 7 p.m. show times.
“We hope students and community members will be excited about this series,” Dickey said. “We want them to say, ‘That is something I’ve always wanted to see, and now it’s here!’”
Admission is free. However, tickets are required and can be picked up at The Bill Daniel Student Center Ticket Office. Tickets for the Sept. 21 screening of “Poverty, Inc.” will be available beginning Monday, Sept. 14.
The Waco Hippodrome Theatre is located at 724 Austin Ave. and The Bill Daniel Student Center is located at 1311 S. Fifth St.
