Dawson Lectures on Church and State Scheduled for March 5-6

"Civil Religion and the Political Parties" will be the topic for the 1997 J.M. Dawson Lectures on Church and State scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 5-6, on the fifth floor of the Cashion Building on the Baylor University campus. The lectures are sponsored by the Center for Constitutional Studies of the J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies.
The Center for Constitutional Studies was established in 1990 as part of the J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies for the purpose of sponsoring research, publishing books and monographs and hosting symposia and lectures which focus on church-state and religious liberty concerns in the United States. The institute itself was established at Baylor in 1957.
On March 5, Dr. Richard Pierard, professor of history at Indiana State University, will discuss "Evangelical Civil Religion of Ronald Reagan and George Bush." On March 6, Dr. Robert Linder, professor of history at Kansas State University, will lecture on "President Bill Clinton, Civil Religion and King David: Panting After Bathsheba or God."
"The purpose of the lectures is to stimulate discussion and inquiry on matters of church and state," said Dr. Barry Hankins, assistant director of the J. M. Dawson Institute of Church- State Studies.
