WACO, Texas (June 10, 2015) – Baylor University’s Campus Kitchens Project will host a movie night at the Baylor Community Garden at the corner of Ninth Street and James Avenue on Friday, June 12.
Yard games and Dr Pepper floats will begin at 7:30 p.m., immediately followed by the start of the movie, “The Hundred Foot-Journey” at 8:30 p.m. Admission to the event is $2; cookies and popcorn will be served.
“We decided to have the movie night in the summer as a way to encourage summer school students to get involved in community events in Waco,” said Caroline McLain, Campus Kitchens’ coordinator. “We also see this as a great way for members of the community to congregate in a beautiful green space where we can raise awareness of the local food movement and how it affects all aspects of our culture, community and economy.”
Campus Kitchens is a student-led program that addresses food waste and hunger in the Waco community. Students who volunteer with the program run cooking shifts, organize drivers, garden and harvest vegetables and provide nutrition education to children and families.
“We have a delivery team who recovers unused food from dining halls on a daily basis and donates it to the Salvation Army, and we have a cooking team that cooks healthy meals to be given to the Family Abuse Center and Mission Waco. We also have a garden team that takes care of the Baylor Community Garden from which all the produce is used in our cooking shifts,” McLain said.
Students who are interested in volunteering can contact McLain at Caroline_McLain@Baylor.edu.
