Wind Ensemble to Present Concert Feb. 21

Baylor University's Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the spring semester at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in Jones Concert Hall. The majority of the concert will be conducted by Michael Haithcock, professor of conducting and director of bands. Mallory Thompson, professor of music and director of bands at Northwestern University, will conduct pieces by Bernstein and Wagner.
The program will open with Jack Stamp's "Aubrey Fanfare," dedicated to the memory of the late Fisher Aubrey Tull, who was Professor of Music at Sam Houston State University for more than 35 years. Robert Russell Bennett's "Suite of Old American Dances" is in three movements: "Western One-Step," "Wallflower Waltz" and "Cake Walk." Native Americans are saluted in "Dreamcatcher" by Walter Mayes. It depicts in musical terms the Ojibwa tribe's philosophy of dreams.
Following intermission, the Wind Ensemble will perform an arrangement of "Profanation" from Leonard Bernstein's "Jeremiah" Symphony. Then will come three diverse pieces either by or somehow related to the great German composer Carl Maria von Weber.
Weber's "Andante and Hungarian Rondo" will feature soloist Kenton Moore, assistant professor of bassoon at Baylor. Richard Wagner's "Trauersinfonie" was written to commemorate the transference of Weber's earthly remains from London to Dresden. It is based on two themes from Weber's opera, "Euryanthe." Concluding the program will be the march from Paul Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphoses on a Theme by Carl Maria von Weber."
