Baylor’s Martin Museum of Art to Host Annual Art Student Exhibition

WACO, Texas (March 24, 2015) – The annual Baylor Art Student Exhibition will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Martin Museum of Art.
“It’s a wonderful learning experience for our art students and also a wonderful opportunity for the department of art to show the proficiency of our students,” said Karin Gilliam, director of the Martin Museum of Art.
Baylor art students were asked to submit up to four pieces produced in class within the last year. There were approximately 200 submissions this year. Of the submissions, 78 were chosen by this year’s guest juror Danville Chadbourne, a renowned Texas sculptor who will present awards to the students at the opening reception.
“For a lot of art students, this is the first time they’ve exhibited. The whole jurying process is really important for our students to go through and experience. They’ll have the privilege of hearing and meeting the juror afterward, and he’ll be speaking to the students about his criteria for choosing pieces,” Gilliam said.
Eight of the 78 chosen pieces will receive a cash reward of $100. In addition, there will a People’s Choice award for a $200 prize. Anyone can vote, and voting be open from March 26 until April 14.
Seventy-percent of the student artwork will be for sale to the public.
“For most of our students, it’ll be their first opportunity to sell their artwork. It’s a great opportunity to purchase high-quality original art at modest prices,” Gilliam said.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
The Martin Museum of Art is located in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center at 60 Baylor Ave., in Waco.

The museum’s mission is one of education and service by bringing outstanding art exhibitions, speakers and guest artists to Baylor University and Central Texas. The museum serves as a valuable teaching tool for students and faculty. Exhibitions complement the courses of art history and studio art taught within Baylor’s department of art.
