Baylor’s McBride Center for International Business Presents Global Business Forum on “The Global Classroom: Issues in International Education”

WACO, Texas (March 11, 2015) – The ninth annual Global Business Forum, presented by the McBride Center for International Business in Baylor's Hankamer School of Business, will be held March 16 to 20, and will examine "The Global Classroom: Issues in International Education."

The Global Business Forum is an annual conference that brings together specialists from the academic, business and public policy communities to explore relevant issues concerning the world economy.

"This year's forum will look at the subject of education broadly and in a global context," said Stephen Gardner, Ph.D., director of the McBride Center and chairman of the department of economics. "It will examine the international business of education, in addition to the market for education. We also will discuss how America stacks up against other countries in the world from an educational perspective and what that means for our country's future."

The forum will analyze the complexity of international education and give students an opportunity to discuss ways that schools, companies and governments can cooperate effectively for mutual advantage.

All events will take place on the fifth floor of Cashion Academic Center. The schedule of events is as follows.

Film: Global Educational Systems — A screening of the film "Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination" will compare how students spend their time in high school in the U.S., China and India. The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 16.

Film: Education in Finland — A screening of the film "The Finland Phenomenon: Inside the World's Most Surprising School System" will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17.

Keynote Dinner: Jouni Valijarvi, Finnish Institute for Educational Research — A dinner and presentation on the world-leading educational system in Finland will feature Jouni Valijarvi, director of the Finnish Institute for Educational Research at the University of Jyvaskyla. The event requires registration and will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18.

Educational Systems: Global Comparisons — A presentation by Patrick W. Blessinger, founder of the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association, and Osman Ozturgut, assistant professor of international education and entrepreneurship at the University of Incarnate Word, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19.

Technology in Global Education — A presentation by Steve Hargadon from the Leading Project and Rick Lumadue, Ph.D., from Texas A&M in Commerce will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19.

Keynote Luncheon: Todd Maurer, Sinica Advisors — A presentation by Todd Maurer, the founding partner of SInica Advisors LLC, will discuss "The Global Classroom: Issues in International Education. The event requires registration and will take place at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19.

Global Internships — A presentation by Lindsay G. Calvert from the Institute of International Education, Tracy Weber from the University of California at Berkeley and Melissa Vivian from Global Experiences, Inc., will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 19.

Global Employee Training and Talent Development — A presentation by Linda Beeler, the vice president for global clients at Mind Gym; Doug Freemen, the vice president of business development at Sovee; and Jeff Lupinacci, the director of global learning and development for Kimberly-Clark, will take place at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19.

Baylor Alumni in Global Education — A presentation by Sunkanmi Agbomeji from the Parallon and Project ELAN and Marco González Aguilera from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education will take place at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 20.

Global Issues Challenge — A student competition organized by Global Business Connect will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, March 20.

"These events are excellent opportunities for students who have an interest in international internships," Gardner said. "It will also help our efforts in improving Baylor's international alumni network.

All events are free and open to the public, although meals require registration.
