Baylor Receives More Than $22 Million in Gifts in '96

WACO, Texas - Baylor University received more than $22 million in gifts and donations during 1996, according to figures from the Office of University Development.
The exact total came to $22,477,773, according to Dr. Richard Scott, vice president for university development. This represents a 22.3 percent increase over the 1995 total. Gifts came from 10,438 donors with alumni donors contributing 35 percent of the total. Alumni gifts rose 31.9 percent over 1995.
Among other donors sources, non-alumni individuals provided $4,205,352; foundations, $2,147,010; corporations, $1,963,730; and non-alumni parents, $1,675,832. The Baptist General Convention of Texas provided $3,590,325 or 16 percent of the total and direct support from churches provided 3.4 percent. Baylor's endowment fund also experienced significant growth. Market value increased from $364,650,832 to $409,780,998 or 12.38 percent. Gifts over $1,000, an important measure of determining the success of the year, made up 82 percent of the total donations, up from 74 percent in 1995.
Most categories saw a significant increase in both donors and dollars between 1995 and 1996. In addition to the increase in alumni gifts and the endowment fund, foundation gifts increased 33.6 percent, non-alumni gifts grew 88.7 percent and corporate gifts increased 24.1 percent.
"We are always pleased when gifts increase over the previous year," said Scott. "Baylor is fortunate to have very loyal donors who respond annually to help the university meet its current needs."
