Ceramic Exhibit Opens at University Gallery Jan. 21

January 17, 1997

A ceramic exhibit featuring the work of Lubbock artist James C. Watkins opens Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the University Gallery in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center on the Baylor campus. The show will run through Feb. 19.
Watkins, a world-renowned ceramic artist who teaches architecture at Texas Tech University, was a contributor to the crafts collection at the White House in 1993 and is currently writing a book on his work. His ceramics range from delicate vases and teapots to massive pots or caldrons. Many of his pieces feature bird or snake motifs. The exhibit will highlight 24 of Watkins' ceramics.
"His is very exciting work," said Paul McCoy, associate professor of art at Baylor. "Watkins uses the flashing technique in his firing, and this makes his ceramics unbelievably lustrous. This is a stunning show and is a wonderful way to show off the freshly renovated gallery. The University Gallery is now state-of-the-art."
As an added bonus to the exhibit, Watkins will give a lecture and ceramic workshop at Baylor on Feb. 18-19. The lecture, tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 18, is open to the public. Watkins will speak on the development of his work. On Feb. 19, he will conduct an all-day workshop in ceramics. Reservations are required to attend the workshop.
The University Galley is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 755-1867.
