WACO, Texas (Oct. 13, 2014) – Baylor Opera will set the stage for a night of romance, betrayal and music on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and Thursday, Oct. 16, with a medley of well-known opera and musical scenes. The program, titled “Love, Deceit, and . . . Tango,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. both days and will take place in Roxy Grove Hall, 624 Speight Ave. in Waco. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Octavio Cárdenas, director of opera, and Jeffrey Peterson, Ph.D., assistant professor of voice, members of the Baylor Opera will perform eight scenes from eight operas and musicals.
“This is a good program for someone who is not familiar with opera. It gives you a taste of some of the most important scenes,” Cárdenas said. “It’s a teaser.”
The eight excerpts were gathered from Giuseppe Verdi’s “Falstaff,” Domenico Cimarosa’s “Il matrimonio segreto,” Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music,” Benjamin Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Ástor Piazzolla’s “María de Buenos Aires,” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” “Così fan tutte,” and “Die Zauberflöte.”
Baylor Opera was established in the early 1940s. Each year, the Opera Theater produces one major work with the orchestra in addition to various performances of opera scenes done in English.
