Baylor Mourns Passing of Alumnus, Former Regent Chair Fred Cameron

WACO, Texas (Aug. 26, 2014) - The Baylor family is mourning the passing of W. Fred Cameron of Houston, who passed away Aug. 24, 2014. A Baylor University alumnus, Parents of the Year and Founders Medal honoree and former chair of the Board of Regents, Cameron was known for his servant heart and dedication to the students of Baylor.

"With the passing of Fred Cameron, the Baylor family mourns the loss of a dear friend and dedicated champion of our beloved University," said Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr. "With his dear wife, Princess, at his side, Fred served his alma mater with immense pride, leaving a legacy of transformational giving through his years of servant leadership and through his generous commitment to student scholarships. We celebrate Fred's Christian life of dedicated service and the wonderful example he leaves behind for all those who knew him and were the witnesses and beneficiaries of his limitless kindness."

Fred and his wife, Princess (BA '60), have been dedicated members of the Baylor family since they met at Baylor's Dr Pepper Hour more than 50 years ago. Cameron earned his BBA at Baylor in 1960, followed by his JD from Baylor Law School in 1962. The Camerons always looked for opportunities to honor their alma mater, and both were frequently recognized for their service to the University.

In 2009, Fred and Princess were awarded the Founders Medallion, the University's most distinguished award reserved for men and women whose service and contributions have been unusually significant to the life and future of the University.

The Camerons have kept their close ties to Baylor, serving as leaders in organizations such as the Baylor Law Alumni Association, Baylor University Women's Association of Houston and the Houston Baylor Club. Fred is a past chairman of the Baylor Board of Regents, serving from 1990-2000, and received the W.R. White Meritorious Service Award in 2002 for his outstanding service and loyalty to the University. Fred also served Baylor College of Medicine on the Board of Trustees for several years and in November of 2013 was elected Trustee Emeritus.

In addition, the Camerons support students through endowed scholarship funds in the areas of law, music and athletics and through generous participation in campaigns for some of Baylor's premier facilities, such as the Baugh-Reynolds Campus of the George W. Truett Theological Seminary and the McLane Student Life Center. They are members of the James Huckins Society within the Baylor University Medallion Fellowship, Old Main Society, 1845 Society and Baylor Bear Foundation.

Cameron, who retired in 2000 from his position as Senior Partner of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P., served faithfully as a deacon at his church, Tallowood Baptist Church. A dedicated member of Tallowood, Fred was an active soloist and choir member for many years.

Fred was predeceased by his parents and his son, Kenneth William Cameron (BU '84).

Fred is survived by his wife, Princess; his children, sons Kirk Robert Cameron (BU '88) and wife, Jeanette, and Keith Charles Cameron (BU '90/'93 JD) and wife, Michelle (BU '93/'96 MPPA); his grandchildren, Kyrie Cameron (BU '12), Kaeden Cameron, Kiera Cameron, Sutton Cameron and Sloane Cameron; and Kyrie's mother, Jan Cameron (BU '86).
