BU Student From Las Vegas Selected for Barnes Scholarship

November 21, 1996

Tory K. Joeckel, a senior education major from Las Vegas, Nev., has been selected as the first recipient of the $1,000 Lavonia Jenkins Barnes Scholarship at Baylor University.
Joeckel is majoring in secondary education with an emphasis in history and English. She has a 3.98 grade-point average and has been on the Dean's Academic Honor List since entering Baylor. She has financed her college education by working several jobs at the same time. Currently, she is youth director at Trinity Lutheran Church and the student assistant for the director of the Latin American Studies program. Joeckel recently married a doctoral candidate in the department of English.
Barnes selected Joeckel as the first Barnes Scholar from among five finalists. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and need. Barnes commented that she remembered the economic difficulties of being married to a young medical student.
The Lavonia Jenkins Barnes Scholarship was established in 1995 by friends of Barnes. Barnes was recognized that same year as a Distinguished Alumna of Baylor.
