Historic Village Sponsors Old Fashioned Christmas

November 14, 1996

Bring family and friends to Baylor University's Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, to experience the spirit of Christmas past. Offering a sharp contrast to today's commercialized holiday, village staff and volunteers will demonstrate what Christmas in Texas was like 100 years ago in a small, rural town.
Sharecroppers and tenant farmers had little cash to purchase presents for family and friends. Instead, farm folk made presents from cloth scraps and other odds and ends they had in their homes or grew on their land. Decorating the community school during Sunday School was often the highlight of the Christmas holiday.
Visitors to the 1890s Christmas at the village can make decorations, sing carols popular at the time and sample a piece of thirds cake along with a steaming cup of coffee. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the village and life in the 1890s.
Admission to "Christmas in Texas - 1890s-Style" is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and $1 for students. Baylor students, faculty and staff are admitted free with a Baylor I.D. For more information, call 755-1160.
