Baylor Theatre Presents “The Learned Ladies”

WACO, Texas (March 21, 2014) – Baylor Theatre will begin its run of “The Learned Ladies” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25.
Directed by David Jortner, Ph.D., “The Learned Ladies” is a play written by Moliere and transcribed to English verse by Richard Wilbur. Although the play was originally set in the 17th century, Jortner decided to set the Baylor production in the 1950s.
Junior Taylor Dodson plays the intellectual mother, Philaminte, in the production. She said she loved the decision to change the time period.
“I was really hesitant at first, because so much of Moliere’s work is about the wigs and costume and spectacle,” she said. “But this decade remains so applicable to the actual plot of the story. It’s still a time where women were expected to be housewives and intellectuals seemed pretty radical.”
With only 13 members in the cast, the group has had plenty of time to bond, as they have been rehearsing for four hours each night.
Dodson said her favorite part of the rehearsal process has been working with cast mates.
“We have so much freedom in creating and playing,” she said. “We have as much fun offstage as we do on.”
Despite enjoying the company of the cast, Dodson is most looking forward to having a live audience when the show opens.
“Having an audience, especially with a comedy, changes the game completely,” she said. “We feel energy and feed off each other and the audience reactions. It's great to work so hard to create something and finally get to share it with others.”
The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 25-29. There will be matinee showings at 2 p.m. March 29 and 30.
