Beatles Tunes Inspire World Premiere Nov. 17

Five members of the Baylor University School of Music's woodwind faculty will perform a concert and introduce a piece of music based on The Beatles at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, in Meadows Recital Hall.
This chamber ensemble, the Baylor Woodwind Quintet, is comprised of Helen Ann Shanley, associate professor of flute; Doris DeLoach, professor of oboe; Richard Shanley, professor of clarinet; Kenton Moore, assistant professor of bassoon; and Margaret Robinson, assistant professor of horn.
Also appearing on the program will be Michael Jacobson, associate professor of saxophone; and Larry Vanlandingham, professor of percussion instruments. They will join the quintet in the evening's closing work-the world premiere performance of a new piece by Brant Adams that is based on the music of The Beatles. All of the tunes in "Fab 4 Fantasmagoria" were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. This Adams arrangement for winds and percussion was commissioned by Baylor.
Opening the Baylor Woodwind Quintet's program will be the "Serenade for Wind Quintet" by Steven Stucky, a 1971 Baylor graduate who is chairman of the Department of Music at Cornell University. Stucky, the former composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, now serves as that orchestra's adviser for new music.
American composer Elliott Carter's "Woodwind Quintet" from 1948 also will be presented, as will the "Trois pièces brèves" ("Three Short Pieces") for woodwind quintet by French composer Jacques Ibert.
